New Delhi — Three-year-old Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha from Madhya Pradesh has etched his name into chess history by becoming the youngest player ever to achieve an official FIDE rating at just three years, seven months, and 20 days.
The remarkable youngster from Sagar district has surpassed the previous record held by Kolkata’s Anish Sarkar, who earned his rating in November 2023 at the age of three years, eight months, and 19 days.
Currently a nursery student, Sarwagya has been awarded a rapid rating of 1,572, an extraordinary start for a child barely out of toddlerhood.
“It’s a moment of immense pride for us. Our son has become the youngest chess player in the world to enter the FIDE rankings,” his father, Siddharth Singh, told ETV Bharat. “We hope he continues to grow and eventually becomes a grandmaster.”

To enter the world rankings, a player must defeat at least one internationally rated opponent. Sarwagya went far beyond that requirement, beating three rated players in tournaments held across Madhya Pradesh and other parts of India, solidifying his status as a rising prodigy.
His achievement has earned admiration from the Indian chess community, adding to the country’s growing legacy of producing global talents at increasingly younger ages.
